Paula Hartmann is a self-taught mobile maker and crafter currently working and living in Toronto, Canada. In her home studio, she creates different styles of mobiles, kinetic sculptures, whimsical installations and jewelry pieces, which are partly inspired by East European and indigenous craft traditions.
A recurring theme in Paula’s work is suspension. She creates light-weight objects which start twirling in the slightest breeze and occupy the space between the earth and the sky.
Inspired by flowers, celestial bodies and native symbolism, her work is intended to ground people in the present moment, rekindling the senses and offering wonder and healing. To achieve this, she often experiments with child-like and everyday material like colourful pompoms, paper discs or things she finds in nature.
The idea for DANCING BLOSSOMS, an installation of kinetic mobiles made from wire and hand-twirled paper spheres, came to me during one of my daily morning walks through the neighbourhood. Inspired by the beauty of blooming tree branches, I aimed to capture the magic of spring in a tangible form.
