Bre Ritchie is a mixed media landscape and abstract artist currently living and working in Hamilton, ON. She has been interested in creating since she was very young. After attending galleries and museums she became fascinated by the courage and ingenuity of artists. She began painting and drawing and found reverence in the details of process and progress.
Bre received her Honours Bachelor of Art degree specializing in art history and studio practice from the University of Toronto and Sheridan Institute respectively. She has also taken courses with Sotheby's Institute for Contemporary Gallery Management. Her work in mixed media painting, low relief and installation sculpture explores themes of growth and transformation and looks to draw connection between people and the natural world they inhabit.
Bre works as a professional artist and is currently the Director and Curator for Crescent Hill Gallery in Mississauga. Bre's artwork can be found in private collections in Canada, the United States and Great Britain.
My practice explores themes of transformation, growth, and what is considered precious. I am fascinated with the play of light in my compositions and how it can bring into focus themes of duality, contrast, and illumination. The pieces I have chosen for this exhibition are abstracted scapes created using textiles, beeswax, spray paint, acrylic and gold leaf. I add gold to my pieces to reinforce the idea of preciousness, to guide the eye of the viewer, and to harness dynamic and responsive light in the composition. The works identify with the theme of Lightness by cultivating curiosity around the play of light on the surface. I believe that there is beauty to be found in the folds of darkness as well. For without this contrast, lightness may not be observed.
