Kieran Hughes

Born in Toronto, Ontario in 1975, Kieran has spent the last 25 years creating paintings, mixed media pieces, and large format works that all serve as powerful mediums for capturing the essence of music.

Kieran begins by collecting a diverse array of brass instruments becomes the initial step. Each instrument brings its own character and history, contributing to the overall narrative of the sculpture. Some pieces may be sourced from antique shops or flea markets, while others might be donated or acquired through collaboration with musicians conceptualizing the design and drawing inspiration from the forms and textures of brass instruments. Kieran envisions a dynamic composition that showcases the curves, angles, and intricate details of trumpets, trombones, French horns, tubas, and other brass instruments.

The intersection of music, art, sculpture, jazz, patience, and vision is a dynamic realm where creativity knows no bounds. At this crossroads, Kieran embarks on a journey that transcends conventional boundaries, weaving together elements of sound, form, improvisation, and craftsmanship to create works that resonate on multiple levels.

For the past twenty-five years, I have devoted my life to the creation of powerful art works—paintings, mixed media pieces, and large format works—that capture the very essence of music. Each piece is a testament to the rich history and emotional depth of the brass instruments I gather, each with its own unique story to tell.

Through my art, I delve into the convergence of music, art, and sculpture, pushing boundaries to create pieces that resonate deeply with viewers. This journey is embodied in my series of work titled 'Balance', where I embark on a timeless exploration of music and creativity, transcending conventional boundaries to forge  pieces that resonate deeply with the human experience.

Inspired by life's rhythms and harmonies, I explore the delicate interplay between analog and digital worlds, using brass instruments as visual metaphors for the intersections in life. I embrace the collision of worlds—where tradition meets innovation, and the familiar dances with the unknown.

In the 'Balance' series, each sculpture serves as a visual representation of these intersections, weaving together past, present, and future on a single timeline. I invite viewers to contemplate the intricate balance of existence, where every note, every brushstroke, holds the potential for transformation.
