Zach Wallace is a 29 year old welder by trade. He was born and raised in Mississauga, Ontario. He began his work as a sculptor in 2015 while he was attending the Welding Techniques program at Sheridan College. He would often complete his lesson work in the shop early and began to use scrap around the shop to create his early works. He is inspired by the works of Anthony Howe, David Smith, Theo Jansen and of course the wonderful plants and animals of our beautiful planet, for example beehives and romanesco broccoli. He met his now wife Shannon in 2015.
My goal is to use recycled scrap metals and sacred geometry to create aesthetically pleasing works which engage people and make them question their perception.
Most of my works are born without a plan. I gather up scrap metals from my job as a stainless steel welder and allow the form and size of available material to inspire me. I try to let the metal talk to me. Using concepts from sacred geometry and mathematics I find the pattern they want to be in.
I want to create works that allow people to see the beauty inherent in nature and industry. Certain patterns are inherent to all things that exist, be it evolved naturally or created by humans. I seek to bring forth the wonder of form.
Some works do have an initial idea however, for example the submitted work “Light and Haze no.1” With this first work in the series, which is the proof of concept, I use cutouts in steel sheets to shape the light from two different sources behind the piece. Where the beams intersect a three dimensional shape emerges. Due to the ultimate effect being when a person has their eyes at the point of intersection, this is difficult to photograph.
